Old Orchard Beach &
Saco Bay
For the young and young at heart, a wide variety of activities
and places of interest are available within a brief walk or
a short drive. Downtown Old Orchard Beach, just minutes away
has its famous pier and various entertainment facilities
such as Palace Playland, Pirates’ Cove Miniature Golf, many
restaurants, as well as fun night clubs with dancing and
entertainment. You’ll enjoy the downtown fireworks display
on the beach every Thursday night near the Old Orchard Pier.
Also nearby, at either end of the beach, are Pine Point and
Camp Ellis, which feature quaint, working waterfronts and
lobster pounds with excellent seafood restaurants close by.
Deep-sea fishing and whale watching charters are available.
The fisherman will want to bring along saltwater tackle.
Rental tackle and bait is available just a short walk or
ride away at the Camp Ellis wharf. Children will thrill at
the opportunity to catch striped bass and bluefish as they
are plentiful in front of the cottage and gather near shore
at high tide. Fishing at the Boathouse Cottage is an
activity surely not to be missed! (Record weekly catch in
2006 was 70 fish!)
The days and nights enjoyed at the Boathouse Cottage can be
filled with activities such as swimming in the ocean, quiet
walks on the beach and exploring nearby Ferry Beach State
Park. Downtown Old Orchard Beach’s fun and amusements are a
brief five-minute drive along the shore. Kayak rentals are
available to enjoy the beach or nearby Saco River. For
relaxation after a day on the beach, enjoy a beachfront
barbeque and simply lounge on the attractive oceanfront
veranda. As the night falls, stars shine and the silvery
moon illuminates Saco Bay, enjoy roasting marshmallows into
the night around a seaside campfire.
The best golfing in Maine is available close by in Old
Orchard Beach at the Dunegrass Golf and Country Club or at
Biddeford & Saco Country Club.
Funtown/Splashtown, the
area’s biggest amusement park featuring the new super giant
roller coaster, and the Aquaboggan Water Theme Park with
grand prix racecars, a mountain of gushing water and every
imaginable way to cool off in the summer heat, is a short
ten-minute drive away. Horseback riding facilities are
featured in neighboring Scarborough, along with live harness
racing and fine dining at The Scarborough Downs Racetrack.
Nearby oceanfront state parks offer scenic picnic areas,
nature walks, bicycle paths, and beach facilities. Discover
the local fauna at the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center where
you can rent a canoe and leisurely paddle your way through a
maze of waterways in Maine’s largest saltwater marsh.
Shopping at great outlets and the ever-popular L.L.Bean
retail store in Freeport is an easy half hour drive just
north of Portland.
Maps, brochures and phone numbers for these and other points
of interest are conveniently provided for you at the
Boathouse Cottage.
